The evening of Friday, September 1st saw me visiting downtown Birmingham with very little to do. I, thankfully, did not have a concert assignment that night but still had my camera gear with me as I headed into the city for a bite to eat. Once I finished, I realized I did not want to go home so I just started to drive a bit. The sun was setting, and I realized it would be the perfect time to do a little photo walk just by myself in the Magic City.
I found myself on the bridge starting at 2nd Avenue South and 24th Street because I knew it'd afford me a great view of the Birmingham skyline as the sun retired for the evening. When I say great view, I mean I knew it would be a mix of the city's signature skyscrapers and smaller buildings, thus presenting a more accurate and realistic portrayal of the city. The divide between the "North" and "South" street designations would also be present, and I definitely wanted to feature that as well. Basically, I wanted to capture the mood of a calm and peaceful Friday night in the city as the month of September began. The opportunity also afforded me a chance to just capture the atmosphere the area, whether it be the traffic, the street signs, or other elements of the city that were present.
Not wanting to go home, I drove around a little more and found myself on the bridge at 2nd Avenue South and Richard Arrington Boulevard. This would afford me a similar view, but it also gave me an easy walk to the lovely Rotary Trail sign that was lit up as night time officially began in the Magic City. I know the sign has been documented by basically every photographer in the area, but it was nice to finally get some shots of my own while also capturing some more of the atmosphere along the way.
It definitely felt nice to have a little time to mysef and just document the city as I saw it. Frankly, I needed the time to myself with just the camera and the city in front of me. I hope to do more of these walks and galleries in the future, especially with the fall approaching and the weather about to be much more pleasant in the evening.
