The Spring Street Firehouse in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama was a giant spaceship on April 8th as DIY Birmingham hosted its "2017: A Prom Odyssey" event. It was the organization's annual prom event that has now become a must do social event in the Magic City. Where as last year's event featured a masquerade theme, this year's event went intergalactic with a space and sci-fiction theme.
A capacity crowd filled the venue and its courtyard area to mingle with friends, take prom photos, and listen to a variety of bands and musical guests that played well into the evening. The prom-goers also showed off their space and futuristic themed formal attire. Many of the outfits were top notch and out of this world. The theme for this year really did translate into some fanastic and creative looks.
I had a blast covering this year's prom event just as I had a blast covering last year's as well. This event allowed me to do a mix of posed and candid shots while utilizing the limited natural light available. I do always love those type of challenges and getting to work in atmospheres different than the norm.
Like last year, I didn't get to stay for the entire span of things, but these photos do represent the start of the prom up until about 11:00 P.M. I feel it is a good representation of things and provides a good snapshot of what the event felt and looked like for the participants.
