A wet and rainy day in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 14th could not dampen the spirits inside Super Skate. That is because The Druid City Dames returned to the skating surface for a roller derby bout against in-state rivals Montgomery Roller Derby. It was a hard fought bout with some stiff hits and blocks, but, in the end, The Druid City Dames rolled on to the impressive home rink victory.
This was the first time I photographed The Druid City Dames and, for a roller derby team that is still relatively new to the scene, I was more than impressed with the execution of the bout, and, most importantly, the skill and ability of the team. The Druid City Dames have some ace skaters, and it showed when they were weaving in and out of the blocks and defense put up by Montgomery. I also loved the aesthetic and feel of Super Skate, which reminded me of so many skating rinks I visited when I was a child. Even though I had not been to the place before, things still felt comfortable and familiar.
I look forward to shooting more of the bouts, including road trips, for The Druid City Dames this season. It'll be fun to see how things progress, and I'm glad the team has invited me out to cover their bouts.
