GRLwood in Concert
The Secret Stages Music Discovery Festival | Birmingham, Alabama | August 3rd, 2019
Recap + Concert Photography
The 2019 Secret Stages Music Discovery Festival is in the books, and I ended this year’s festival with 26 acts photographed. At first, I was going to do a recap post featuring a photo from each act. Then I saw a performance on the 2nd day of the festival, and I entirely changed my approach. GRLwood, hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, absolutely blew me away with their set and was the highlight of the weekend.
The impact of a two day festival was really starting to get to me late on Saturday night. After photographing one of the bands I needed to document, I made it a point to walk over to the venue known as The Hangar to, at least, catch a few minutes of GRLwood as I had heard really good things about them. As soon as I walked inside, the performance I saw and heard was a punch straight to my face in the best way possible. It was loud, fast, energetic, and everything I want out of a show. I immediately started to document the performance and caught my second wind.
Lead singer Rej Forester was dynamic and played for the camera throughout the time I was able to photograph the set. Drummer Karen Ledford set the tone and rhythm on drums with some high impact playing. It was a great combination that resulted in, easily, the best performance I saw at this year’s Secret Stages festival.
This is what I love about photographing Secret Stages. It’s a music discovery festival, and I walked away with a hell of a discovery. I know I’m not the only one who did that as well.
