There were 4 acts on the bill at Birmingham, Alabama's Iron City venue on May 2nd, but two of them stood out from the others. One was the headliner, In This Moment, and the other was Avatar. Both bands put on highly visual and highly entertaining sets that were big hits with the sold out audience and, specifically, this photographer.
My love of photographing a good spectacle on stage should be well known by now so I was more than delighted when I finally got a chance to see Avatar live. I had heard and seen a lot about their performances in the past so I was happy when their set lived up to expectations. The twisted ringleader look Johannes Eckerstrom employs on stage is a fantastic aesthetic and plays well with the band's style of metal. The Swedish really do know how to do over the top theatrical metal correctly.
The main event of the evening, though, was the headling performance by In This Moment. If you have never seen an In This Moment show, you are definitely missing out. Maria Brink and the rest of the band stage a full on production tinged in horror movie elements set to the sounds of heavy metal music. She is a commanding and charismatic frontwoman that changes identities throughout the set yet remains a captivating figure on stage. It is a wild show that is a feast for the eyes.
