"Beast Epic" is the name of the latest release from Sam Beam, otherwise known as Iron & Wine, and the sounds from that album filled the room of Saturn Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama on August 29th. It was a sold out show as the Magic City more than turned out to welcome Iron & Wine to town for the performance.
"Beast Epic" has been praised for Iron & Wine's return to a more stripped down and simplistic folk sound and production compared to previous releases. That stripped down sound was apparent with this performance, and the audience adored it. Flanked by a small backing band, a backdrop of clouds, and a bottle of wine, Beam happily explored the minimalist sounds of "Beast Epic" while also digging deep into his back catalog. Regardless if the song was old or new, the crowd listened intently to every word and every note Beam performed for them.
This was my first time seeing Iron & Wine in concert, and I must say I came away impressed on multiple fronts. The songs themselves were incredibly strong, and Beam's delivery complimented them beautifully. The production was also top notch with great lightning and the previously mentioned cloud backdrop. Both elements provided a great and complimentary atmosphere for the music Iron & Wine gave to the audience.
