Clyde and Gracie Lawrence, the brother and sister duo from New York that makes up the lead portion of the group Lawrence, showed off their talent and skills at Saturn Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama on March 9th. The siblings have showcasing their musical talents since childhood, but this particular show gave evidence that the group will be one to watch in the coming years.
For those who don't know, the band's sound is a mix of pop and soul, which is complimented by an extensive backing band featuring percussion, horns, and guitars. Clyde and Gracie's voices can take you by the most pleasant of surprises if you're thinking the group is going to go with a different musical apporach. Top this off with a highly energetic and charismatic performance style, and you have the makings of a very impressive band and a very impressive album, "Breakfast", which they showcased during the performance.
The young fans in attendance, most of them college age, just like the band themselves, totally got into the performance danced about all while Clyde and Gracie did just the same on stage. It was fun seeing the energy on display for this performance.
Before I got to see Lawrence perform, I was fortunate enough to spend a few moments with the band to do a pre-show portrait session. Clyde and Gracie were incredibly gracious and easy to work with and offered some fantastic suggestions, including the usage of the stacked bunk beds in the green room at Saturn Birmingham. I do always enjoy getting to do pre-show portrait sessions, and this particular one quickly turned into one of my favorites.
It'll be interesting to see how far Lawrence can go off of the momentum from "Breakfast" and then how far they can go with future releases and musical explorations. I'm definitely keeping an eye on them and wishing them nothing but success.
