Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin, the two driving forces behind Mandolin Orange, were quite happy to be back in Birmingham, Alabama on April 25th. The duo had played in the city before, but this particular evening saw them headlining a concert at Saturn Birmingham in front of a large crowd for a Tuesday evening.
This was my first real exposure to the sounds and style of Mandolin Orange, and I was impressed with what I heard and saw. I have always had a soft spot for bluegrass so the classic but modern approach Franz and Marlin take definitely registered with me on a positive note. The lighting and visual aesthetic of the show also connected as there was a sense of warmth in the room to match the warm sounds from Mandolin Orange. The show was a sensory delight.
I do always enjoy shows like this one because they expose me to bands I might not have discovered on my own. Based on the large crowd in the room for this concert, it is safe to say Mandolin Orange will continue to grow their base of supporters and be a force in whatever musical genres they explore.
