Of Montreal, under the leadership of the dynamic Kevin Barnes, is known for their elaborate and out of this world stage performances that draw heavily on 1960's psychadelica. Their signature style was on full display at Saturn Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama on May 12th as the group put on just a stellar and wonderfully over the top concert that was a huge hit with everyone in attendance. The performance also came just over two months after the release of the band's fifteenth studio album, "White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood".
I've known about Of Montreal and their style for some time, but I had never been able to catch them in concert until this particular show. The wait was definitely worth it because, man, they blew me away in the best way possible. The overall vibe and presentation of the show is, as they say, completely my aesthetic, and I felt like a kid in the candy store while I photographed the performance. The giant skull puppet, the angel wings, the video projections... they all combined with Barnes' androgynous stage presence to form an absolute treat of a show. If you've never seen Of Montreal in concert, fix that right now.
