OHMME Backstage Portraits
The Firehouse | Birmingham, Alabama | September 5th, 2018
Recap + Pre-Concert Photography
This post will be a little bit different than most. With that being said and out of the way, OHMME was in Birmingham, Alabama on September 5th, and I had the pleasure of meeting up with the duo of Macie Stewart and Sima Cunningham to do some pre-concert portraits. The two musicians, who have made significant waves in the Chicago music scene, were in Birmingham to perform at The Firehouse, a great DIY venue in the Avondale neighborhood. I, unfortunately, had to miss the actual show, but I'm really glad I was able to catch up with Macie and Sima before their performance to do these portraits. I got a chance to listen to OHMME's first full length album "Parts", which was released in August on the Joyful Noise label, before the shoot. I really liked what I heard, and it was easy to understand why the duo are key parts of Chicago's current sound.
OHMME was great to work with during this brief portrait session, and we made use of some really colorful backdrops close The Firehouse. Macie and Sima even suggested one of the spots, a great and vibrant green wall that happened to be just across the street. I mean I'll never say know to incorporating green into anything so I was all about obliging their request. That goes in line with my chief philosophy of a pre-concert portrait shoot. Whenever I do a session with a band or a musician, I want the subjects to be themselves and comfortable above all else. I hate posing or structuring the shoot to present the band as something they are not. Macie and Sima took to this quite quickly, and their personalities, the personalities that make OHMME a must-listen-to band, really came out during the session.
