David Bazan rebooted the Pedro The Lion name back in the fall of 2017 and then took to the road for a series of shows. That series of shows led Bazan, along with guitarist Erik Walters and drummer Sean Lane, to Saturn Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama on February 17th. The group played to a captive audience and entertained them with a journey through the band's back catalog.
This was my first experience with Pedro The Lion's music, and, from what I heard, I came away impressed. It was obvious this band meant a lot to their fans back in the day and still means a lot to them now. There was a definite connection between Bazan, Walters, and Lane and the large crowd that gathered at Saturn to see them perform.
I must also commend the band for their lighting and production, which was top notch for a show like this. The lighting really helped convey the mood and message of the band's music. The band had a lot of white light on them, and that allowed for some creative interpretation on my part after the fact. I was in the mood for a purple theme for this show because I felt the color really did match the style of the band. Frankly, you can never go wrong with purple.
