Puddles Pity Party, a 7 foot tall clown with a deep booming but golden voice, might sound like a bizarre and out of left field act, but, to his fans at Iron City in Birmingham, Alabama on July 29th, it was the only place to be. The clown put on a stellar performance that mixed great renditions of songs, a lot of comedy, and a lot of hugs.
My only experience with Puddles Pity Party before photographing this show was watching his two performances on America's Got Talent. Friends had been singing his praises for a while, but I did not know what to expect until I saw the clips of Puddles on stage in front of the judges. I was blown away by his voice and stage presence as I will always appreciate someone that fully understands the dynamics of the total package of performing.
A Puddles Pity Party show is not just a musical experience. It's a comedy show and a literal clown show. The songs might be the big hooks, but a lot of the heart comes from the well crafted and performed clown routines put on in between the musical numbers.
The whole audience was in such a wonderfully cheerful and happy mood as they watched Puddles perform on stage. I really fed off that energy, especially because it was my first concert shoot in about two weeks. The lull had been getting to me so I was more than glad to be able to shake it off by getting to photograph such a fun and different type of concert. This really was a great show to be able to document.
