Slaughter Beach, Dog + Thin Lips & Insignificant Other in Concert
Saturn Birmingham | Birmingham, Alabama | September 2nd, 2018
Recap + Concert Photography
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was represented well at Saturn Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama on September 2nd as Slaughter Beach, Dog, the solo project from Modern Baseball's Jacob Ewald, was in town for a performance under the venue's illuminated parachute. Joining Ewald and Slaughter Beach, Dog were Thin Lips, another band hailing from Philadelphia and fellow member of Lame-O Records, and Insignificant Other of Gainesville, Florida. After strong sets by Insignificant Other and Thin Lips, Slaughter Beach, Dog more than followed up with a strong headlining showcase.
The Slaughter Beach, Dog side project has allowed Ewald to explore different musical directions than the ones taken by Modern Baseball. This has been evident on Slaughter Beach, Dog's albums, such as 2017's "Birdie", and it was evident with this particular performance. Ewald had a laid back and chill vibe, and it resonated well with his young audience. The vibe and aesthetic of the parachute show also allowed the audience to have an up close and personal connection with the performers. This made for a great atmosphe. It also made for some great visuals as a rainbow of lights decorated the entirety of the parachute. Photographing a parachute show can be tricky, but the rewards are usually quite high.
