Birmingham, Alabama's own The Burning Peppermints were back home on March 23rd for a performance at Saturn Birmingham. Unfortunately, I had to dip out before the show due to, frankly, hitting the proverbial wall after a very long week.
Not all was lost, though. In fact, I was able to conduct a really fun pre-show portrait session with the band that quickly turned into one of my favorite band portrait sessions I've done.
The Burning Peppermints have always been know for a very fun, energetic, and youthful visual style and approach to their performances. Their look is always themed and coordinated, which I'm definitely a fan of because not many bands take the time to consider those elements. The guys in The Burning Peppermints definitely get and understand the spectacle side of concerts while being able to back it up with great musical ability.
This session was done on the balcony of Saturn Birmingham just before sunset. The recent time change has made these sessions possible, and I've been taking advantage of them as much as possible. The soft and muted sky along with the colorful woodwork on the balcony meshed nicely with the pastel pink suits and green shirts worn by the bands members. I don't usually photograph a lot of pink in what I do, but I was very happy with how the color popped during this session.
Aiding the available colors was the personality of The Burning Peppermints. Again, these guys get it and understand you have to have fun with things. They came up with some really fun poses and let their youthful irrerence take control, which is something I was more than happy to see and encourage. I am all about working with bands that know how to have fun and really be themselves during a portrait session.
I was a bit bummed I had to miss out on the performance, but I am glad I was able to get what I did during this session. I wish they could all be as enjoyable as this one was.
