"City Club", the latest album by The Growlers, was released on September 30th, 2016. To support the release, the band has been on the road with the apppropriately named City Club 2017 Tour. The February 28th stop on the "City Club" 2017 Tour happened to be Saturn Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama where The Growlers were welcomed by hundreds of adoring fans.
Going into the show, I didn't really know anything about The Growlers. Their music had pretty much missed crossing me over the years. I did, however, take some time to listen to "City Club" in an effort to get an idea of what the vibe and mood of the show would be. I must say I was pleasantly surprised and dugged the band's "Beach Goth" style. The surf rock elements could easily be picked out, and those definitely registered with me.
When it came time for the show, I was curious to see how the sound would play in front of a live audience. I was definitely not disappointed as I dug the charisma and connection lead singer Brooks Nielsen had with the crowd. As the lights fluctuated on stage, he effortlessly glided about and commanded the attention of the entire room.
The young audience then proceeded to get into a chilled and relaxed mood to match what Nielsen and the rest of the band was putting out on stage.
I couldn't stay for long, especially since The Growlers were playing a very extended playlist for this performance. What I did see and hear, though, I did rather enjoy and, importantly, it made the shooting process that much more enjoyable and worth it.
