The Tragic City Rollers, the women's roller derby league based out of Birmingham, Alabama, closed out their home schedule for 2017 with a double header bout at the Zamora Shrine Center. The second bout of the night featured a competition against Montgomery Roller Derby, but it was the first bout of the night that caught my attention. It was an intra-squad bout pitting Tragic City Rollers teams against each other. The Hot Quads squared off and skated against the Rollsheviks.
Going to photograph roller derby, specifically the Tragic City Rollers, was a trip down memory lane for me. I photographed the team quite a bit during their early years, and I took numerous road trips with friends to see them play outside the Birmingham area in places like Huntsville, Atlanta, and Raleigh. Getting back into the groove of watching the sport and photographing it was a fun experience, and it was a nice challenge to photograph all the moving parts that make up a roller derby bout.
As for the bout itself, the Hot Quads and Rollsheviks gave each other some hard hits and impressive skating moves throughout the competition, but only one team could walk away the victors. That distinction went to the Hot Quads as they put on a rather impressive performance against the competition from the Rollsheviks. Everyone in the bout, though, skated well and gave the audience quite an entertaining show that was well worth praise and applause.
I look forward to seeing the schedule for the Tragic City Rollers in 2018 and beyond. I'll definitely be trying to make their bouts a regular event and feature on this site as, again, I had a blast photographing it and soaking up the atmosphere present. I'd also like to thank and congratulate the fine folks behind the Tragic City Rollers for putting on such a fun event for people to enjoy!
