Fans of roller derby and the Tragic City Rollers packed the Zamora Shrine Center in Irondale, Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, on March 24th for the first bout of the 2018 season. Birmingham's roller derby team participated in two bouts for the fans as the Tragic City Rollers All-Stars took on the Hustlin' Rollers from Memphis Roller Derby in the first contest, and the Iron City Maidens took on the Beach Brawl Sk8r Dolls from Panhandle United Roller Derby in the second contest.
In the first bout, the Tragic City Rollers got the 2018 season off to a great start with a convincing 359-53 victory over Memphis. The Tragic City Rollers controlled the bout from the start with some impressive skating along with a great combination of offensive and defensive roller derby tactics. The halftime of this contest also saw the public introduction of the Tragic City Rollers Troublemakers, a youth squad for ages 7 to 17. Due to a prior commitment, I had to dip out early during the second bout.
It was great to get back in the swing of photographing roller derby, and I am looking forward to covering more bouts for the Tragic City Rollers throughout the 2018 season. Photographing events like roller derby and the culture around it is something I thoroughly enjoy and will continue to try to do more of in the future.
