Turkuaz is a nine member powerfunk band based out of Brooklyn, New York. That might seem like quite the statement, but it gets amplified once one sees the band perform live. Fans of the group's sound and aesthetic in Birmingham, Alabama did just that on April 27th as they came to Saturn Birmingham to see Turkuaz funk up the venue.
Turkuaz has been described as a blend of the likes of Sly and The Family Stone, Genesis, Talking Heads, Parliment, and even more, and that is an accurate description. The rich vocals from singer and guitarist Dave Brandwein gets complimented by the various backing vocals, the robust horn section, the multiple guitars, and ample percussion.
The show wasn't all a feast for the ears. Turkuaz presented a fantastic and fabulous lighting configuration. The colorful and plentiful lights added wonderfully to the band's happy and upbeat sound. Things were bright and lively for both the ears and the eyes.
It will be interesting to see what Turkuaz does in the coming months and years. This is a band that can put on a seriously fun live performance and, as more people find out about them, their stock should only rise.
